Histology, Cytology, & Endocrine QUIZ & LAB Flashcards
When shipping samples to a laboratory…
1. slides should not be sent in a bag with a formalin container
2. slides should be labeled and in slide containers
3. all choices are correct
4. lab forms should be completely filled out, including history.
- all choices are correct
A sample that demonstrates inflammatory cytology may be due to…
1. all choices are correct
2. trauma
3. infection
4. allergy
- all choices are correct
Bone marrow samples may be collected from…
1. head of femur
2. head of humerus
3. all choices are possible collection sites
4. ileum of pelvis
- all choices are possible collection sites
Characteristics of malignant cells include
1. mitotic figures
2. large amounts of cytoplasm compared to nucleus
3. pink granules
4. small, dark nucleus
5. all choices are correct
- mitotic figures !!
Other malignant features:
- High N:C ratio
- Mult necleoli in in nuclei
- Open chromatin
- Anisocytosis (rbc unequal size)
Correct preparation of a patient for thoracocentesis to treat pneumothorax is
1. surgical scrub, sterile gloves, sternal recumbency
2. alchohol prep only, sternal recumbency
3. surgical prep, sterile gloves, lateral recumbency
4. alcohol prep only, lateral recumbency
- surgical prep, sterile gloves, lateral recumbency
- Sternal recumbency is for fluid in pleural space, lateral recumbency is for air in pleural space
Characteristics of inflammation include:
1. all choices are correct
2. presence of macrophages
3. presence of organisms within white blood cells
4. presence of eosinophils
5. presence of neutrophils
- all choices are correct
Regarding the use of glucometers:
1. glucometers are as accurate as a chemistry analyzer
2. glucometers should have a control run at least once monthly
3. all glucometers work equally well in dogs/cats
4. glucometers are as accurate for values below 80mg/dl as they are for values 100-180mg/dl
- glucometers should have a control run at least once monthly
T/F: Cytology samples are as accurate as biopsy samples for liver evaluation.
False
T/F: If an animal is given 2 U of insulin with U-40 regular insulin, the effect will be different than 2 U of U-100 regular insulin.
False.
2 Units is 2 Units… the effect is the same. The concentration of insulin just tells you how much fluid the insulin is suspended in.
For example: If I put one sugar cube in a small cup of tea and you put one sugar cube in a large mug of tea… if we both drink our entire cups, how much sugar will each of us get? (one sugar cube)
(in this example the small cup of tea is U100, and the large cup is U40)
T/F: If “Fluffy” needs 12 U of U-100 insulin and an insulin syringe is not available, you could give her 0.12 ml of this insulin.
True
12u/U-100 = 0.12mL
Grey capped collection tube (sodium fluoride) is used for which purpose?
1. glucose testing
2. antibody testing
3. rodenticide toxicity
4. coagulation times
- glucose testing
T/F: The Water Deprivation Test is safe to perform on polydipsic animals and it can be run overnight on unsupervised patients
False
Polydipsia: excessive thirst
The test of choice for evaluation of Hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s Disease) is:
1. High Dose Dexamethosone Suppression Test (HDDST)
2. Glucose Challenge Test
3. ACTH Stimulation Test
4. Low Dose Dexamethasone Suppression Test (LDDS)
- ACTH Stimulation Test
List two indications for collecting/evaluating a bone marrow sample. (i.e. Why do we do this test?) (4)
- Looking for cause of abnormal peripheral blood cell counts (red cells, white cells or platelets)
- Looking for cause of abnormal morphology of peripheral blood cells
- Testing for occult infectious disease (i.e. FeLV)
- Evaluating for cancer of bone marrow (leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma)
Are some methods of glucometers* more accurate than others? Why?
*Such as vet glucometers vs human glucometers, or glucometers vs catalyst
Yes! Different monitors are programmed/calibrated for different species.
