Cytology/Histology LAB Flashcards

1
Q

What are important & prominent cytology features that are consistent with inflammation? (5)

A
  1. Pyknosis:
    - Slow cell death
    - Small, condensed, dark nucleus that may be fragmented.
  2. Karyolysis:
    - Rapid cell death
    - Occurs with some septic inflammatory reactions
    - Appears swollen, ragged nucleus without intact membrane
  3. Bacteria
  4. Neutrophils
  5. Monocytes

Q

What are important & prominent cytology features that are consistent with malignant neoplasia? (8)

A
  1. Anisokaryosis
    - Any unusual variation in the overall size of the cell nucleus.
  2. Pleomorphism
    - Variability in size & shape of the same cell type.
  3. High nucleus to cytoplasm ratio (H:C)
  4. Increased mitotic activity
  5. Coarse chromatin
  6. Multinucleation
  7. Nucleoli vary in size
