Histology Flashcards
Epithelia
Sheet-like tissues that cover free surfaces and ducts, sacs, and tubes.
Simple epithelium
One layer of cells
Stratified epithelium
More than one layer
Pseudostratified
All attached to basement membrane but not all reach free surface
Transitional epithelium
Specialized, capable of great distension
Squamous epithelium
Flat, wider than tall
Cuboidal epithelium
Cube shaped
Columnar
Column-like, taller than wide
Glandular epithelium
Secretes products
Ciliated epithelium
Surface has cilia
Sensory epithelium
Senses
Cornified epithelium
Impregnated with keratin
Absorptive epithelium
Absorbs
Glands
Organs that secrete products and are derived from Epithelia
Endocrine gland
Secretes product directly into bloodstream, ductless. Thyroid and adrenal
Exocrine gland
Secretes products through a duct onto free surface. Liver, pancreas
Simple gland
One lobe, unbranched duct
Compound gland
2 or more lobes, branched duct
Mesocrine secretion
Secretion by exocytosis
Apocrine secretion
Tip of cell breaks off into duct
Holocrine secretion
Whole cell is shed onto free surface, then breaks open and releases product.
Tissue
An assemblage of cellular and fibrous elements, in which one particular type predominates, organized to form material basis of a functional system.
Smooth muscle
Slow-acting, involuntary; lines gut, ducts, vessels
Skeletal muscle
Fast-acting, conscious and reflex control
