Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Runs from olfactory epithelium to forebrain, consists of the axons of neurosensory cells
CN I/Olfactory -special sensory
Brain tract, not a nerve
CN II/ Optic, special sensory
Connects inner ear to hindbrain
CN VIII/ Statoacoustic/Vestibulocochlear (mammals), special sensory
Evidence that special sensory are not the same as modified spinal
Neurons develop from placodes, lack distinct ganglia
Innervates nasal mucosa, vestigial in humans
CN 0/Terminal, dorsal modified spinal
Branch of V that carries General SS from skin on top of head
V1/ophthalmic/profundus; dorsal modified spinal
Carries SS, and VS to mouth and oral glands, SM to hyoid arch muscles
VII/Facial dorsal modified spinal
Carries SS from skin, SM from muscles of 3rd pharyngeal arch, VS from pharynx and base of tongue, SS from lateral line system
CN IX/Glossopharyngeal; dorsal modified spinal
SM to 4th-7th pharyngeal arches, VM to viscera, VS from viscera
CN X/Vagus; modified dorsal spinal
SM to extrinsic ocular muscles; associated with V1
CN III/Oculomotor, ventral modified spinal
SM to extrinsic ocular muscles; associated with CN VIII
CN VI/Abducens; ventral modified spinal
SM to tongue muscles in Tetrapoda
CN XII/Hypoglossal; modified ventral spinal, associated with X
Branch of V that carries general SS from skin of jaw and SM to mandibular arch muscles
V3/Mandibular; dorsal modified spinal
Branch of V that carries general SS from upper jaw region
V2/Maxillary, dorsal modified spinal
