histology
study of tissues
tissues
groups of cells that have similar function and structure when grouped together
what is made when tissues are combined?
organs
4 types of tissue
epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous
epithelial tissue
internal specialized tissue
what are the functions of epithelial tissue?
protection, absorption, secretion, and excretion
what are the four subtypes of epithelial tissue?
endothelium, mesothelium, mucous membrane, and glandular epithelium
endothelium
specialized epithelium that lines the circulatory system
-within blood vessels and lymphatic vessels
mesothelium
specialized epithelium lining great cavities such as the thoracic and abdominal cavity
mucous membrane
lines digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive tracts
-this is what is within the middle ear canal
glandular epithelium
forms glands and synthesize special compounds
connective tissue
allows movement and provides support
3 types of connective tissue
loose, dense and specialized
loose connective tissue
adipose (fat cells)
specialized connective tissue
cartilage, bone, dentin, blood and lymph
dense connective tissue
tendons and ligaments
muscle tissue
ability to contract (shorten and thicken)
3 types of muscle tissue
smooth, striated/skeletal, and cardiac
smooth muscle tissue
involuntary, controlled by the autonomic nervous system
-in organs/viscera
striated or skeletal muscle tissue
caused body to move, voluntary, striped with light and dark bands
cardiac muscle tissue
only in the heart, coordinated pumping
nervous tissue
highly organized and makes up the brain, spinal cord, and nerves
-basic unit is the neuron
neuron
axon, dendrites, and soma
-axon and dendrites work together to send out messages
-soma is the body
