Hip bursitis Flashcards
main cause of bursitis
overuse leading to friction and inflammation
where are the 2 trochanteric bursas
between glute max tendon and trochanter
between glute med tendon and trochanter
palpated over glute max tendon
pain local to lateral hip / can’t sleep on affected side
pain is worse climbing stairs or getting out of car cause glutes are engaging
where is the iliopectineal bursa
between iliopsoas mm and iliofemoral ligament
palpate by having them supine w hip flexed to 90
bursa located 1-2 cm inferior to middle 1/3 inguinal ligament
pain at anterior hip , can radiate down anterior leg due to pressure on femoral nerve
antalgic posture usually in hip flexion and external rotation
causes of trochanteric bursa
altered hip biomechanics due to leg length discrepancy
LBP causing antalgic gait
OA
surgery
repetiive actions
ITB contracture
causes of iliopectineal bursa
hip flexor tightness
repetitive activity
causes of ischial bursa
sitting for a long time on hard surface
excessive sprinting - due to hamstring contraction
what might relieve pain from an ischial bursa
pressing down on brake or gas pedal due to increased tone in mms that cross the knee which rotate the ischial tuberosity away from the car seat
contributing factors to bursitis
mm imbalance
poor biomechanics
postural dysfunctions
lack of flexibility
where is the ischial bursa
between glute max and ischial tuberosity
palpated through glute max
well localized pain over ischial tuberosity
referal down posterior leg that can mimic sciatic pain
which hip bursitis can mimic sciatic pain
ischial
