Ankylosing Spondylitis Flashcards
immobility and fixation of a joint =
ankylosing
inflammation of vertebrae =
spondylitis
inflammatory stage of AS ends around what age
40
disease does not progress for the rest of your life
where does AS begin in the spine
synovitis at SI joints
vertebral bone growths replacing intervertebral discs are called
syndesmophytes
long standing AS symptoms
vertebrae take on fused appearance (bamboo spine)
inflammation of iris (uveitis) leading to pain, blurred vision, edema
cardiovascular involvement
early stage symptoms of AS
fatigue
morning stiffness in lumbar
pain in buttocks, low back, posterior thigh
lumbar lordosis due to spasm
flexion contractures in hips
worse after sitting for long time
later stage symptoms of AS
movement with spine severly reduced
mm wasting
thoracic curve more evident
chest is fixed and flattened
thoracic mms atrophy
chest expansion reduced
breathing becomes diaphragmatic
head forward posture
neck movements lost
1 goal when treating AS
maintain throacolumbar mobility and respiratory function
causes
idiopathic
associated w HLA-B27 antigen
can be genetic
men more affected
onset is insidious - beginning in early adulthood
extreme cases of AS
whole spine is fused into flexion
pain can diminish with fusion
