small mammals open slightly in parturition
Ilium
craniodorsal part of pelvis
articulates with sacrum
forms part of acetabulum
Ischium
middle part of pelvis
forms acetabulum & pelvic symphysis
Pubis
medial part of pelvis
forms acetabulum & pelvic symphysis
L shaped in lateral view
Femur
head projects medially to acetabulum

shock absorbing
Sacrotuberous ligament

only in dogs
Coxo-femoral joint
hip ball & socket synovial high ROM (limited by soft tissues) suction effect with synovial fluid in acetabulum fibrous joint capsule
Teres/round ligament
keeps femoral head in acetabulum
