-Divorce taking too long, Pope refusing, break meant his own secular laws.
-Desperate for a male heir and Anne Boleyn.
-Anne pregnant in 1553- needed marriage for legitimacy.
Why was royal power important?
-Henry wanted to be supreme.
-Papal power resented.
-Act in restraint of appeals 1533- people should not appeal to the Pope.
Why was royal finances important?
-Crown would gain church power- ‘wealthiest man in Christendom’
-Royal treasury empty because of French wars- all church funds go to Henry.
