What happened after Edward IV died in April 1483?
-Richard III seized his Nephews Edward and Richard, takes them to the tower and declared himself as protector.
-He then declared them both bastards and took the crown for himself.
What happened to Richard in October 1483?
-Richard III supporter the Duke of Buckingham rebels
-Many of Edward IV’s former supporters join Henry in the continent.
How did Henry VII have a claim to the throne?
-Weak claim from his mother Margaret Beauford.
-Believed his win at the Battle of Bosworth gave him God’s approval and therefore legitimacy.
How did the battle of Bosworth end?
-Richard Charged
-Stanley’s army joined in on Henry’s side.
-Richard battered to death.
What are some of Henry’s strengths after the battle of Bosworth? (4)
-Richard III had already been unpopular, rumoured he killed the children if Edward IV in order to take the throne.
-The country needed peace and stability after the wars.
-Richard III was dead and the majority of those with a better claim.
-He had not dependent on another noble family to help him take the throne.
What were some of Henry’s problems after the Battle of Bosworth? (5)
1- Some of Richards supporters were still alive such as Northumberland a powerful noble.
2- Henry VII had a weak claim to the throne.
3- Yorkist heirs such as the De La Pole family were still alive.
4- No experience of government and was unknown to most subjects- he had spent fourteen years in exile after the Lancastrians were defeated at Tewksbury in 1471.
5- How he should be rewarding his subjects/nobles.
How did Henry solve some of his problems after the battle of Bosworth? (7)
1-imprisoned Northumberland and only allowed his son to be released after loyalty promises, after 20 years and the idea that he had proved himself, he gave him land and titles.
2-A very speedy and lavish coronation and marriage to Elizabeth of York.
3-He imprisoned the young Earl of Warwick, keep a close eye on the De La Pole family and marry Elizabeth of York.
4-Hired Edward IV’s supporters to help run the country.
5-Some rewards- avoiding overmighty nobles
6-Backdated his reign to the day before Bosworth, anyone fighting him a traitor.
7-Quick coronation so they couldn’t claim parliament made him king.
Who is Elizabeth of York and why did Henry marry her?
-Eldest daughter of Edward IV.
-A distant cousin.
-Could strengthen his position due to her legitimacy.
What did Henry’s years in exile mean after Lancastrian defeat at Tewksbury for England?
-14 years meant he was largely unknown.
-Lack of knowledge for running the country.
-Also meant he could offer peace and stability.
