CN XII lesion
Asymmetric protrusion
common in men over 50 who are drinkers, smokers, usually appears on
side or base of tongue-persistant nodules
Cancer
discolored lesions raised with feathery or
corrugated pattern- cannot be scraped off- HIV/AIDS
Hairy Leukoplakia
benign, dorsum has scattered smooth areas, gives changing
map appearance
Geographic Tongue
yellowish to black with enlogated papillae on
dorsum, associated with antibiotic therapy
Harry Tongue
with increasing age, benign, may have food
accumulate in crevices
Fissured Tongue (scrotal tongue)-
smooth tongue- vitamin deficiency (niacin,
folic acid, B12, iron), chemotherapy
Atrophic Glossitis
thick white coating, may be scraped off, chemotherapy or prednisone
Candidasis
small purple or black round swellings under
tongue, with age, benign
Varicose Veins-
painful, round ulcer that is white or yellowish
surrounded by a halo of red mucosa, heals 7-10 days
Aphthous Ulcer (canker sore)-
painless lesion of seconday syphilis,
highly infectious, raised, oval covered by grayish membrane
Mucous Patch of Syphilis
round bony growths on inner surface of mandible- bilateral,
asymptomatic, harmless
Tori Mandibulares
ulcerated lesion
