HEART SOUNDS Flashcards
mitral valve closure, why is this heart sound unique?
S1
mitral sound (M1) louder tricuspid sound (T1)
aortic valve closure
S2
Rapid ventricular filling
S3
Atrial Contraction
S4
what is unique about the S2 sounds?
closure of aortic (A2) and pulmonic valves (P2)
what is the effect of the S2 heart sound on inspiration?
▪ Right side filling time is increased → increases right ventricle stroke volume
▪ Delays closure of pulmonic valve splitting S2 into 2 audible components (during inhale)
what is the effect of the S2 heart sound on expiration?
▪ These two sounds fuse into single sound
▪ Walls of veins contain less smooth muscle
of the 2 sounds produced by the S2, which on is louder?
A2 is normally louder and first → aortic pressure is higher
P2 is relatively soft → lower pressure in pulmonary arteries
