Heart Sounds Flashcards
What is S1 heart sound due to?
Closure of the mitral and tricuspid valve
What is the S2 heart sound due to?
Closure of the pulmonary and aortic valve
What is another term for the closure of the mitral and tricuspid valve?
Systole (S1)
What is another term for the closure of the pulmonary and aortic valve?
Diastole (S2)
Where is the mitral valve?
Between the left atrium and left ventricle
Where is the tricuspid valve?
Between the right atrium and right ventricle
Where is the aortic valve?
Between the left ventricle and the aorta
Where is the pulmonary valve?
Between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery
What might you suspect if the S1 heart sound is soft?
Mitral regurgitation
What might you suspect if the S1 heart sound is loud?
Mitral stenosis
What might you suspect if the S2 heart sound is soft?
Aortic stenosis
What is a third heart sound due to?
diastolic filing of the ventricles
When is a third heart sound considered normal?
< 30 years old (may persist in women up to 50 years old)
What pathology can a third heart sound be associated with?
Left ventricular failure (e.g. dilated cardiomyopathy)
Constrictive pericarditis
Mitral regurgitation
What is a fourth heart sound due to?
Atrial contraction against a stiff ventricle
