Aortic Regurgitation Flashcards
What is Aortic Regurgitation?
Abnormal backflow of blood into the left ventricle
What is Aortic regurgitation due to?
Aortic pressure greater than LV pressure
What will eventually happen to the left ventricle?
Decompensate and dilate
What are the 2 main causes of aortic regurgitation?
Aortic root disease- most common
valve disease
What does aortic root disease include?
Hypertension
Aortic dissection
Aortitis (e.g. Giant cell aortitis)
Takayasu’s disease
What does valve disease include?
Bicuspid aortic valve
Rheumatic fever
Infective endocarditis
What does aortic dissection include?
Marfan’s
Ehlers-Danlos
Pseudoxanthoma elasticum
What are the possible signs of aortic regurgitation?
Corrigan’s - exaggerated carotid pulse
Quinke’s - nailbed pulsation
De Musset’s - head nodding
Duroziez’s - diastolic femoral murmur
Traube’s - ‘pistol shot’ femorals
What is corrigan’s sign?
Exaggerated aortic pulse
What is Quinke’s sign?
nailbed pulsation
What is De Musset’s sign?
head nodding
What is Duroziez’s sign?
Diastolic femoral murmur
What is Traube’s sign?
‘pistol shot’ femorals
How can aortic regurgitation be diagnsoed?
Echocardiogram
During which stage of the heart cycle does the backwards movement of blood occur?
Diastole
