A small and medium vessel vasculitis
What is Buerger’s disease also known as?
Thromboangiitis obliterans
What is Buerger’s disease strongly associated with?
Smoking
Who is commonly affected by buerger’s disease?
Young male smokers of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern origin.
What are the main features of Buerger’s disease?
Extremity ischaemia
Superficial thrombophlebitis
Raynaud’s phenomenon
How can the extremity ischaemia present in someone with Buerger’s disease?
Intermittent claudication
Ischaemic ulcers
What is a classic sign of Buerger’s disease?
Acutely ischaemic limb, without a background of peripheral claudication.
What is the management of Buerger’s disease?
Smoking cessation ± vasoactive medication (such as nifedipine).
