Headlice
A
- Itchy scalp due to possible previous infection
- White colour eggs are in the shaft of the hair
- Grayish brown colour louse

Treatment for headlice
Physical insectiside
A
- Cyclomethicone isopropyl and dimocticone kill head lice
- Headlice cannot become resistant for example the lyclear spray, lyclear shampoo or Hedrin 4% lotion

Chemical insectiside
A
- Chemicals that kill headlice and the eggs
- Permethrin and malathion two treatments must be carried out 7 days appart to reduce reinfection e.g. lyclear cream and rinse

Wet combing
A
- Removal of headlice without chemicals
- Use fine tooth comb on conditioned hair to remove eggs and lice
- Repeat for 4-14 days until no lice are found

Failure of head lice treatment
A
- Headlice becomes resistant to chemicals and insectisides
- Misdiagnosis of treatment person just has empty eggs in hair
- Non-complience as treatment was not done correctly
- Re-infection from another person or from the original source

Cautions for headlice treatment
A
- Alcohol based insectsides are not suitable for customers with eczema or asthma as they can worsen these conditions
- Use in a well ventilated space as they are extreamly flammable

A
- The whole family may need treatment and any children require ages to be identified

What are the symptoms?
A
- Have nits or lice been found before
- Treatment should only be given to patients that have live lice in their hair

How long have the symptoms been present?
A
- Customer could have been re-infected so sorce of the headlice is important to identify

A
- Has the customer tried a product that hasn’t helped they may have resistance to the chemicals
- Suggest using a physical technique through the come or instruct how to remove lice correctly

- See if the patient has asthma or eczema as some product are not suitable
