Positive institutions as element of positive psychology
Psychology would be able to help document what kinds of families result in children who flourish, what work settings support the greatest satisfaction among workers, what policies result in the strongest civic engagement
Collective well-being
- well-being occurs as group phenomenon
- due to emotional contagion the affective states of group memebers to converge over time
- targeting well-being of a group might be more effective
Happy people are important for a flourishing society
- more succesful across multiple life domains
- more likely to help others.their societies, more sympathetic to those in need
–> if we want to benefit from individual happiness on a societal level, we also need to invest in it on a societal level
What are institutions
- the socio-relational rules and habits that have evolved within sociatal systems
- the foundation of habitual routines, creating mutual expectations of peoples behavior and performance
Societal needs
- have continual supply of new members
- socialize new members
- deal with health sickness
- assign jobs and tasks
- create knowledge
- control its members
- defend against enemies
- produce and exchange goods

Insitutions that enable positive experiences and positive traits
- institutions that enable positive trais and thereby positive experiences

What is heath
The current WHO definition of health: ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
How should we define health?
Given the aging population and the rise of chronic disease, positive health would be better defined as: ‘the ability to adapt and self-manage in the face of social, physical and emotional challanges
- yu can have a disease but still be healthy
- addresses people’s strenghts, resiience and self-management
- health is not a goal in itself, but a means to lead a meaningful life
Positive education
The education of a child shall be directed to: the development of the child’s personality, talents and mental and physical abilities to their fullest potential
Observation in a primairy school
- in every group I see one or twho children that make me wonder, where their on switch is
- they get stuck in a system where others decide what is being learned
- literacy and numeracy
Positive emotions mood produces
- braoder attention
- more creative thinking
- enhances the quantity of ideas
- divergent thinking
- curiosity and exploration
- creative and integrative approaches to negotiation
What does positive education entail
Happiness is a skill that can be learned with committed effort
- H = setpoint + circumstances + coluntary actions
- PE = the application of positice psychology in educational contexts to promote positive mental health, allowing students and staff to flourish
Elevation as mechanism
- starts with individual intitiative
- gets copied with others
- changes socio-relational rules/habits
- thereby creating a (more) positive institution
Elevation
Elicited by acts of charity, generosity, or any other strong display of virtue. It leads to the feeling that one has been uplifted or elevated in some way
- it gives rise to a specific motivation or action tendency: emulation, the desire to help others, become a better person, and do charitable acts
