What is the hair’s structure?
Flexible strands of dead, keratinized cells produced by hair follicles
Where does the hair grow from?
- Hair bulbs
- Hair is in a follicle originating deep in the dermis - vascular
Where is the hair located?
Everywhere, except palms, soles, lips, nipples & part of genitals
What is hair’s function?
- Senses insects on the skin before stinging scalp
- protects against physical trauma, heat loss, and sunlight
Eyelashes- Shields eyes
Nose- filters large particles
What is the third inner space of the hair follicle called?
The medulla
What is the second inner space of the hair follicle called?
The cortex
What is the first inner space of the hair follicle called?
The cuticle
What are the two types of hair?
- Vellus
- Terminal

The body hair of children and adult females
* Fine in texture
Terminal
Coarser, longer hair of the eyebrows & scalp is terminal, may also be darker
* Appear in axillary and pubic regions during puberty for both sexes (face, chest, arms, legs) -> For males
* stimulated growth by androgens (male sex hormone)
