Cranium Bones Flashcards
Frontal Bone
The Anterior Cranium
Supraorbital Margins
Ridge above the eyes/orbitals
Supraorbital Foramen
Little holes above the eyes/orbitals, blood vessels, and nerve passageway
Frontal Nasal Suture
Connects the nasal bridge to the frontal bone
Anterior Cranial Fossa
Depressions on the frontal surface, visible in the skull
(Fossa is a bone depression)
Occipital Bone
Articulates with parietals, temporals, and sphenoid
Foramen Magnum
“Big Hole,” fits the spinal cord
Occipital Condyle
Articulates with C1 (Cervical Vertebrae 1)
(Condyle is a rounded projection)
Posterior Cranial Fossa
Depressions on the back surface, visible in the skull
Temporal Bone
Articulates with the occipital, parietal, sphenoid, zygomatic, and mandible bones.
Meatus
Passageway in bone
Zygomatic Process
Part of the Zygomatic Arch, touches the zygomatic bone (Process: bone extension for muscle attachment)
Middle Cranial Fossa
Middle Depressions inside the skull
Sphenoid Bone (Bat-like shape)
“Keystone of the Cranium,” its central location lets it touch cranial bone
Sella Turcica
Saddle shaped area (head of the bat) and holds pituitary gland
