Functions of Integumentary System Flashcards
The different types of protection (3)
- Physical
- Chemical
- Biological
Chemical Barriers
Skin secretion (acid mantle/dermicidin) & melanin (UV protection)
* Human Defensin : punches holes on bacteria (looks like sieves)
* Cathelicidins : released in large quantities by wounded skin (prevents infection)
Biologic Barrier
- Immune response activated by lymphocytes, attacking foreign bodies/antogens (proteins).
- Includes: Langerhans’ cells and macrophages (second line of defense)
- Effective in immune system
Physical Barrier
Layering of epidermis - keratin
* Phospholipid bilayer: lamellated granules (glycolipids), tight junctions, oil
Body Temp Regulation
Regular body temp: 98.6F/37C
* Too hot -> vasodilate -> sweat
* Too cold -> vasoconstrict -> shiver
Cutaneous Sensation
Receptors that respond to stimuli (pain, texture, etc.) arising outside the body (exocytosis)
Metabolic Sensation
- Synthesis of Vit.D: UV light converts cholesterol into Vit.D, which is important in calcium absorption (microvilli lines digestive tract to promote absorption)
Blood Resevoir
Areolar = about 5% of blood volume
Excretion
Nitrogen containing wastes are eliminated from the body via sweat and urine.
* Eccrine sweat glans
*Salts
