Social comparison
The process of thinking about information about one or more other people in relation to the self > Festinger
Related attributes
Attributes that are related to the performance of the task at hand
Similarity principle
The preference we have for comparing ourselves with others in the basis of related attributes
A unidirectional drive upward
For example that most students prefer to compare themselves to others who are slightly better than them
Upward social comparison
When people compare themselves to someone they perceive to be superior
Favourable comparative evaluation
Perceiving oneself slightly above the class average
Entity theorists
Believe that intelligence is an innate and stable property of a person
Incremental theorists
Believe that performance can be improved through effort

Students tend to have lower academic self-concepts in school with high performance because although students’ academic self-concept is positively influenced by their own academic performance, the high skill levels of others int heir immediate context have a negative influence
Contrast effects
Treedt op wanneer het zelfevaluatieoordeel uit de context wordt gehaald. Dus als studenten andere studenten gebruiken bij het inschatten van hun eigen capaciteiten, zouden hun inspanningen moeten resulteren in een verlaagd zelfbeeld
Assimilation effects
Occur when the self evaluative judgement shifts to the social context
Stereotype threat
The treat that one’s performance will correspond to a negative stereotype associated with one’s own social group
