H&N 4: Oral & Nasal Cavities #3 Flashcards
What does the inf. conchae art with?
maxilla
What is the maxillary sinus lined by?
resp epi
What is the nasal cavity?
- irreg shaped cavity lying between bony plate of of florr (which sep it from cranial cavity above)
- high + deep but narrow + div into R + L by nasal septum
What does the nasal cavity communicate with?
- post. with nasal part of pharynx
- ant. with env
- sup. with cranial cavity, orbit + paranasal air sinuses
Where are the nasal conchae found + their function?
- project from lat. wall of nasal cavity
- tubulence greatly inc amount of contact between inhaled air + mucosa
- particles greater than 4mm rarely get past nasal cavities
What is the structure + function of ethmoid?
- thin
- sep nasal from orbital + cranial cavities
- full of air cells
What is function of lacrimal duct?
- takes excess lacrimal fluid from orbit
- lacrimal fluid keeps eye moist
What are the paranasal air sinuses?
- surround nasal cavity
- lined by resp epi
- empty secretions into nasal cavity
List the paranasal air sinuses
- Frontal
- Ethmoidal
- Sphenoidal
- Maxillary
What does sup. part of nasal cavity contain?
receptors for olfactory nerve
What does the olfactory bulb contain?
smell receptors
What is location + function of maxillary nerve?
- goes through pterygopalatine fossa
- sensory supply middle + post. parts of nasal cavity
What is the function of the pterygopalatine gang?
- taste fibres from it come down to join greater palatine nerves which provide sensory supply to hard palate
What is ant. part of nasal cavity supplied by?
- ext. + int. by V1
What gives general sensory fibres to nasal cavity?
branches of V1 + V2
