Guidance in Sport Flashcards
What are the four types of guidance
Verbal, Visual, Manual, Mechanical
What is Verbal guidance
When a coach describes how to perform a skill or tells a performer something
What are the advantages of Verbal guidance
Questioning can make performer think
Useful for sharing basic information
Especially useful for higher level performers
Good way of highlighting key teaching points
What are the disadvantages of Verbal guidance
It can result in information overload
It can be boring
Can be hard to hear in noisy arenas
Complex things are often hard to explain
What is Visual guidance
Information given to a performer that they can see which helps them to develop
What are the advantages of Visual guidance
Useful for all levels of performers
Performers can copy what they have seen
Especially good for young/inexperienced performers
Specific aspects of a whole skill can be observed
Vision is people’s most dominant sense
Allows performers to see what is required
What are the disadvantages of Visual guidance
Demonstration or image must be of good quality
Some skills are too complex to demonstrate
Not effective if performers are not paying attention
What is Manual guidance
Involves a coach physically moving a performer into the correct position or supporting them as they perform a skill
What are the advantages of Manual guidance
It is good for complete beginners
It allows some development of correct feel
What are the disadvantages of Manual guidance
The performer may not think they are actually performing themselves
A movement can feel different when someone else is moving your body for you
What is Mechanical guidance
Takes place when equipment is used to assist in the coaching process
What are the advantages of Mechanical guidance
It is good for potentially dangerous skills
It can allow performer to gain a feel for a movement without fear
It is good for building confidence
What are the disadvantages of Mechanical guidance
Equipment may be expensive
Performer can come to rely on equipment
