Jacks (also called trevally)

A

Are large silver or bluish fish seen in open water at the reef’s edge. Some species are solitary, while others school.
They’re strong swimming predators.
Common types:
Bar, Crevalle, Big-eye, Amberjack and Bluefin.

Barracuda

A

Are long, cylindrical and silver with faint markings. They have large mouths with visible sharp teeth. Large barracuda tend to travel alone, but smaller species may gather in schools.
Common types:
Great, Chevron and Pacific barracuda.

Porgies (sometimes called sea bream)

A

Are oval shaped and have steep sloping foreheads. They may have blue or yellow markings over a silvery base, and you may see them in sandy areas adjacent to the reef.
Common types:
Sheepshead, Saucereye and Doublebar sea bream.

Chub (or rudderfish)

A

Have elongated oval bodies, usually solid silver. You tend to see them in the water over the reef rather than close to the reef.
Common types:
Yellow, Bermuda and Brassy rudderfish.
