Group 10 Flashcards
Flounders
Are flat fish with both eyes on one side of their body. They swim on their side. Some species can change color, and most hide by burying themselves in sand except for their eyes.
Common types: Peacock, Eyed, Gulf and Panther flounders
Scorpionfish
Blend in well with their surroundings, usually resembling local flora. Have stocky bodies & spiny dorsal fins that carry venom. Some are quite venomous. Hard to spot because they hold still. The lion fish is a scorpionfish, though it doesn’t lie on the bottom.
Common types: Sand Diver, Snakefish & Common lizardfish.
Frogfish (sometimes called Anglerfish)
Have bulky bodies and large upturned mouths. They blend in well with the bottom, and move by walking on their pectoral fins. Frogfish have an appendage that dangles in front of their mouths, which baits prey within reach.
Common types: Sargassumfish, Longlure and Freckled frogfish.
