Filefish

A

And triggerfish make up a family called leather jackets, so named for rough textured skin. These fish have ovalish or diamond shaped bodies. Filefish have an elongated dorsal fin similar to the triggerfish, only it’s more spike-like.
Common types: Scrawled, Orangespot Whitespotted, Broom and Longnose filefish.

Triggerfish

A

Get their name from their elongated fin, which has a shape similar to a gun’s trigger. Part of the leatherjacket family, these fish have ovalish or diamond shaped bodies.
Common types: Queen, Black Durgon, Ocean, Triton, Clown and Picasso triggerfish.

Puffers

A

Get their name from the fact that they can swell their bodies up like balloons. Some have spines that stand out when they do this. All species have powerful jaws; most have dark spots or blotches.

Trunkfish and Cowfish

A

Make up the box fish family, so-named for their triangular, boxy shape. These fish move slowly with sculling fin motions. Cowfish have two”horns” that distinguish them from trunkfish.
Common trunkfish : Smooth, Spotted, and Cube trunkfish.
Common Cowfish: Scrawled and Honeycomb Cowfish.

Goatfish

A

Have long, cylindrical bodies and barbels that hang from their chins, much like a goat’s. They feed on the bottom and may gather in schools. Goatfish have many color variations.
Common types: Spotted, Yellow, Red Patch, Longbarbel and Yellowsaddle goatfish.

Trumpetfish

A

Get their name from their long, tube-like bodies and long mouths. They stalk by hanging head down, often near other vertical corals or growth that camouflages them from their prey. They may be blue-grey, bright yellow, brown or an intermediate shade.

Drums

A

Have long fore dorsal fins and striking, black and white coloring. You see them under ledges.
Common types: Spotted, Jack-knife fish and Highhat drums.
Some different drum species look very similar.
