GROSS EXAMINATION

Cut-up
Consists of describing the specimen & placing all or parts of it into a plastic cassette in preparation for tissue processing.
Gross examination
It is during this procedure that the pathologist will describe the morphological changes evident in the tissue examined, such as color, shape, & size of the specimen.
Gross examination
tissue cassettes may be processed either:
I. Manually-processed.
II. Loaded onto an automated tissue processors (for processing through to wax).
Always remember that the manner in measuring in gross examination is by use of______
centimeters (cm)

entails describing the shape, color, size, & defining characteristics of the sample to be subjected to further processing.
Gross examination
In describing small specimens, the ff. Information has to be mentioned:
- Color & consistency
- Shape of fragment
- Size of the largest piece/fragment (greatest dimension of the largest fragment)
- Number of pieces/fragments (aggregate dimension)
In describing medium & large specimens. the ff. information has to be mentioned:
- Various anatomical components
- Identification of macroscopic landmarks
3.Orientation markers or sutures - Any relevant lesion
- Background tissues (beyond the lesion under consideration)
