Negative self talk is self-critical or demeaning. It creates anxiety and self-doubt and has a negative impact on performance

How can self talk help with stress
Self-talk can reduce the stress response by making the athlete feel as if they are good enough. It can reduce the physical effects of the stress response on performance.

Self-talk can improve concentration as athletes can use focus words on certain skills they are performing

Self talk can be used to increase and decrease arousal levels.
