Coaching Activities Flashcards
What are the 4 types of coaching activities?
- Simple to complex
- Chaining
- Shaping
- Static to dynamic
What are the 4 steps of the coaching process?
- Introduce the skill to be learned.
- Demonstrate and explain the skill.
- Practice the skill.
- Correct errors and give feedback.
Describe what simple to complex activities are.
A drill that begins with an easier version of the skill and as the skills are mastered, complexities are added until the whole skill is able to be performed at the speed and intensity required for competition.
List 4 examples of simple skills.
- Are straightforward
- Typically require little practice to learn.
- Require little cognitive ability.
- Taught as a whole.
List 4 examples of complex skills.
- Are more difficult to learn.
- Requrie practice to learn.
- Require more cognitive ability.
- May need to be broken down and simplified to be taught.
Describe what shaping is.
The process of simplifying a complex skill or using an incomplete version of a skill. Typically the skill is demonstrated by the coach before the athlete practices the simplified skill. The skills remain the same however the complexity changes.
Describe what chaining is.
Breaking a complex skill into parts and teaching the skill part by part. Each component of the skill is practised until perfected before the next component is added to the routine.
Describe what static and dynamic skills are.
A drill begins with the players executing skills in a stationary position and then gradually add in the movement required until it is performed at the speed and intensity required for competition.
List 4 examples of static skills.
- Performer practices the skill while in a stationary position.
- Can concentrate on technique
- Limited decision-making.
- Predictable environment.
List 4 examples of dynamic skills.
- Perofrmer is moving.
- Environment becomes less predictable.
- Increased decision-making required.
- Used to extend skill development.
What is an example of shaping?
- A basketball layup. Laying up the basketball in a stationary position and slowly adding in movement (running to the hoop)
- Hurdling
- High jump
What is an example of chaining?
- Juggling a ball
-Triple jump
