Gonorrhoea Presentation

A

-Symptomatic in men, symptomatic in half of women
Men
-Urethral infection: discharge, dysuria, asymptomatic
-Rectal infection: usually asymptomatic, may cause discharge or bleeding
Pharyngeal infection
-Usually asymptomatic
Women
-Endocervical: frequently asymptomatic, increased/altered vaginal discharge,
-Urethral infection

A
  • Other causes of vaginal discharge e.g. chlamydia
  • Other causes of pelvic pain e.g. endometriosis, appendicitis
  • Other causes of pharyngitis

  • Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT)

Gonorrhoea Management

A
  • Refer to GUM clinic
  • Avoid intercourse until both they and partner have completed treatment
  • Routine screening
  • Ceftriaxone 500mg IM, azithromycin 1g orally
  • Test of cure
