Globalisation Flashcards
Globalisation
Process in which people become increasingly connected on a global scale due to developments in communication and trandportation
- worldwide communication easier and businesses operate globally
Problem with defining globalisation
Should include economic, cultural and political integration
Often ignored negative impacts (marginalisation)
Globalisation difficult to define: negative impacts
Mertens and D’Haenens shows digital divide between upper and lower classes in use and digital resources
Globalisation difficult to define: cultural homogenisation does not always occur
Giddens- reverse colonisation (definitions often say western ideas are accepted globally however ignores local cultures asserting their own cultures in western places)
Eg. Latinisation in California
Globalisation difficult to define: some groups resist individualism and choice (globalisation usually claims postmodern characteristics will be result of it)
Lesaca- extremist religious groups resist these postmodern characteristics that come with globalisation
Eg. ISIS resist liberal ideas and use modern technology to threaten the west
Cultural homogenisation:
Friedmans- globalisation is actually westernisation
