Global Trends Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
The different plants, animals and micro-organisms, their genes and the ecosystems of which they are part.
What are greenhouse gases?
Gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect by absorbing heat.
What is climate change?
An increase in global temperatures as a result of increased greenhouse gases (e.g. CO2) which traps heat in the Earth’s atmosphere resulting in rising sea levels, changing weather patterns and extreme weather events.
List extreme weather events attributable to climate change.
Bushfires Hurricanes/Cyclones Floods Droughts Heatwaves
Explain rising sea levels due to climate change
Because increased greenhouse gases cause global warming leading to warmer temperatures so glaciers melt therefore more water in ocean RESULTING IN RISING SEA LEVELS
List examples of changing weather patterns attributable to climate change
↑ heatwaves and hot days
↓ rainfall in dry areas = drought
↑ rainfall wet areas = flooding
↑ humidity
What is mass migration?
The movement of large groups of people from one geographical area to another often occurs as a result of conflict or persecution (based on religion).
What is conflict?
A loss of peace; a clash arising out of a difference in thought and/or interests. Often results in opposing action between armed fighters in a battle/war.
What is world trade?
The exchange of goods and services between countries. It is driven by production costs in different countries.
What are digital technologies that enable knowledge sharing?
Electronic tools, systems, devices and resources that generate, store and process data in a digital format e.g. apps, mobile devices, social media.
