What is DFAT?
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; they manage the Australian Federal Government’s overseas aid program.
What are the features of Australian aid?
Promote national interest by:
- Reducing poverty in low- and middle-income countries
- Contributing to sustainable economic growth
Focusing on Indo–Pacific region
Why does Australia give aid?
Humanitarian reasons – helping those less fortunate is important; moral responsibility or ‘obligation’ to help those in need (especially as a high-income country).
Improves regional security – forges ties with other countries, reducing the risk of conflict and political instability, management of transnational threats e.g. drug trafficking, people smuggling, spread of infectious diseases.
Benefits to trade – as well as economic resources, Australia provide resources produced by Australian companies. This enhances Australia’s economy whilst benefitting low- and middle- income countries at the same time.
