Factors Causing Variations in Population Groups Flashcards
Describe biological factors
Factors relating to the body that impact on health, such as genetics, body weight, birth weight, blood cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose regulation, hormones.
Examples of biological factors
Body weight Birth weight Blood cholesterol levels Blood pressure levels Glucose regulation Hormones/sex Genetic predisposition
Decribe sociocultural factors
The social and cultural conditions into which people are born, grow, live, work and age. These conditions include socioeconomic status, social connections, family and cultural influences, food security, early life experiences, and access to affordable, culturally appropriate health care.
Examples of sociocultural factors
Income Employment Social connectedness Gender stereotypes Cultural appropriateness inc. language barriers Food security
Describe environmental factors
The physical surroundings in which we live, work and play; this includes water and air, workplaces, housing, roads, nature, schools, recreation settings and exposure to hazards
Examples of environmental factors
Work conditions
Housing conditions
Urban design and infrastructure e.g. proximity to take away food outlets, access to recreational facilities, road quality
Biological factors for males (and some for females)
High body weight/BMI
Genetics/sex/hormones - testosterone males risk taking behaviours, oestrogen females protective CVD and osteoporosis until menopause
Also males - testicular and prostate cancer, Females - cervical, uterine and higher rates breast cancer due to sex/genetics
Sociocultural factors for males
Gender stereotypes
Environmental factors for males
Dangerous work environments
Biological factors for Low SES
Low birth weight
Sociocultural factors for Low SES
Lower education levels
Lower income
Higher rates unemployment
Environmental factors for Low SES
Dangerous work conditions
Urban design and infrastructure e.g. high proximity to energy dense fast food outlets, poorer quality infrastructure and physical resources e.g. public open spaces
Biological factors for outside major cities
High body weight/BMI
High blood cholesterol levels
Sociocultural factors for outside major cities
Higher rates of unemployment
Social isolation
Environmental factors for outside major cities
Dangerous work conditions
Urban design and infrastructure e.g. poorer road quality, poorer quality/reduced access to recreational facilities such as a gym
