GIT Physiology and Metabolism -Lecture 7 Flashcards
What is Glucose Stored as?
glycogen
What is Triglycerides stored as?
adipose (fat)
what are amino acids stored as?
skeletal muscle
Where are Ca and Phosphate stored?
bone
What is iron stored as?
ferritin
Where are fat soluble vitamins stored?
liver and adipose tissue
How much water is produced with the metabolism of 100g of protein?
42g
How much water is produced with the metabolism of 100g of carbs?
60g
How much water is produced with the metabolism of 100g of fat?
100g
What four ways can glucose be metabolised?
- oxidative metabolism in tissues
- glycogen synthesis and storage in skeletal muscle and liver
- pentose phosphate pathway (produce DNA and RNA)
- Lipogenesis in the liver and adipose tissue for energy storage as triglycerides (ruminants don’t convert glucose to long chain fatty acids)
What is the effect of insulin and is it catabolic or anabolic?
anabolic. reduces glucose and free fatty acids in circulation
What is the effect of glucagon and is it catabolic or anabolic?
catabolic. increases glucose and free fatty acids in circulation
What areas have the highest requirements for glucose?
The CNS, developing foetus and mammary glands
