Gingival Recession Flashcards

1
Q

Whats gingival recession?

A

apical migration of marginal gingiva as well as the fact that the it is gradually displaced away from the cemento-enamel junction, thereby exposing the root surface to the oral environment.

Q

Basis of miller’s classification?

A

1.Extent of gingival recession defects

2.Extent of hard and soft tissue loss in interdental areas surrounding the gingival recession defects.

Q

What is Class I in Miller’s Classification of Gingival Recession?

A

Marginal tissue recession does not extend beyond the mucogingival junction, with no loss of interproximal tissue; 100% root coverage is expected.

Q

What is Class II in Miller’s Classification of Gingival Recession?

A

Q

What is Class III in Miller’s Classification of Gingival Recession?

A

Marginal tissue recession extends to or beyond the mucogingival junction, with some loss of interproximal tissue or tooth rotation. The interproximal bone is still coronal to the apical extent of the recession; only 70% root coverage is expected.

Q

What is Class IV in Miller’s Classification of Gingival Recession?

A

Marginal tissue recession extends to or past the mucogingival junction, with severe loss of interproximal tissue or tooth rotation; less than 50% root coverage is expected

Q

Primary causes of gingival recession?

A

Low-level and long-lasting trauma.

It is also known as chronic trauma, especially due to inappropriate
daily brushing, and it physically wounds gingival tissues.
Traumatically using the tooth brush as well as other oral hygiene agents over delicate gingival margins on a daily basis might gradually and slowly lead to gingival recession over the years.

Q

How occlusal truama leads to v shaped dehiscence?

A

Initially, primary occlusal trauma might induce symptoms characterized by diffuse pain combined with a modest increase in tooth mobility, lasting for days, weeks or even months.
On free surfaces, such as the buccal one, depending on cortical plate or buccal bone plate thickness (Figs 1, 5, 7, 8), vertical bone loss results in local loss
at the buccal bone level. This leads to bone dehiscence over the affected root — a V-shaped cavity in the bone contour
