Brushing Technique Flashcards
Brushing should be performed ……DAILY for…… minutes with…….. brush
Twice, 2, soft bristle
Toothbrush should be replaced every
three or four months , or sooner if the bristles are frayed to ensure proper cleaning of the teeth.
What are brushing techniques?
1.Bass
2.Stillman
3.Rolling
4.Charter
Explain bass method of brushing
Position the filaments toward the root at a 45° angle to the tooth
Place the brush with the filament tips directed into the gingival sulcus
Brush back and forth using very short vibratory strokes till the count of ten
Reposition the brush to the next set of teeth
Indications of BASS method?
Inter proximal areas,
Cervical areas beneath the height of contour of enamel,
Exposed root surfaces
Other 2 names of ROLL METHOD?
Also known as the rolling stroke method or the sweep method
Explain ROLL METHOD?
Direct the filaments towards the root of the tooth
Place side of the brush on the gingiva and have the plastic part of the brush even with the tooth
Press the filaments against the gingiva and roll the brush over the teeth
The wrist is turned slightly and the filaments follow the contours of the teeth
Indications of ROLL METHOD
1.Children
2.Older people with limited dexterity
In which method Too much force may lacerate the alveolar mucosa and too quick sweep strokes may cause no brushing of the cervical third of the tooth
Rolling
Explain Charter method
Position the filaments towards the chewing surface of teeth
Place the sides of the filaments against the enamel and angle them at 45° to the tooth
Vibrate the filaments gently but firmly, keeping the filaments against the tooth
Reposition on the next set of teeth
Indications of charter method
1.Individuals with open interdental spaces with missing papilla and exposed root surfaces
2. Those wearing FPD or orthodontic appliances
3.Patients who have undergone periodontal surgeries
4.Patients with moderate interproximal gingival recession
Indications of stillman method
removing plaque from gumline and pt with gingivitis
Disadvantage of stillman method
This method is time consuming and can cause damage to epithelial attachment
