GI12 Flashcards
What are Peyer’s patches?
Unencapsulated lymphoid tissue
*Contain specialized M cells that take up Ag
Where are Peyer’s patches found?
Lamina Propria and Submucosa of ILEUM
What happens to B cells that are stimulated in the Germinal Centers of Peyer’s patches?
Differentiate into IgA-secreting plasma cells
*Reside in Lamina Propria
What antibody deals with intraluminal gut antigens?
IgA
“think of IgA, the Intra-Gut Antibody”
*Always say “secretory IgA”
What is Bile composed of?
Bile salts Phospholipids Cholesterol Bilirubin Water Ions
What are Bile salts?
Bile acids conjugated to Glycine or Taurine
*makes them water Soluble
What is the rate-limiting enzyme in Bile?
Cholesterol 7a-hyodroxylase
What is the function of Bile?
- Digestion and absorption of lipids and fat-soluble vitamins
- Cholesterol excretion (body’s only means of eliminating cholesterol)
- Antimicrobial activity (via membrane disruption)
What is Bilirubin the product of?
Heme metabolism
What enzyme makes Conjugated bilirubin (DIRECT)?
UDP-glucuronosyl-transferase
*adds Glucuronic acid
