Central Rheingau- includes most of the region’s vineyards and the most renowned wine growing villages. Soils are a mix of slate, quartzite, sandstone and loess and clay on the lower slopes.
Western Rheingau- extends from Assmannshausen northward to Lorchhausen on the right bank of the river. The entrance to the Rhine Gorge and the Mittlerhein are here. This is a colder site and has purer slate soils.
Maingau- is on the Main River, and offshoot of the Rhine. It is very warm here, and soils transition from the Rhenish Massif to the Mainz Basin. There are loess-covered loams and marls here. Lower elevation.
