Genomes and Chromosomes Flashcards
Genome
all of the genetic material in a cell
Bacterial chromosome
single, circular loop
Plasmids
accessory pieces of DNA beyond the chromosome
nucleoid
Bacteria pack their DNA into a series of loops or domains
oriC:
Origin of replication
ter
End point of replication
Primase:
synthesizes an RNA primer
complementary to the DNA sequence
DNA polymerase III
adds nucleotides in a 5′ to 3′ direction on each side of the fork
- starts at the RNA primer
3’ to 5’
parental strand is continuous
-leading strand, no interruption
5’ to 3’
parental strand is discontinuous
-lagging strand, formation of Okazaki fragments
Okazaki fragments
stretches of new DNA between each primer
DNA polymerase I:
removes RNA primers and replaces with DNA
Ribonuclease H
can also remove RNA primers
Ligase:
links together the Okazaki fragments of DNA into a single strand
Tus proteins
these sites will block replication forks traveling from the opposite direction.
