Bacterial Culture, Growth, and Development Flashcards
What is a complex media?
nutrient rich but poorly defined
What is a Minimal defined media?
contain only those nutrients that are essential for growth of a given microbe
What is an Enriched media
complex media to which specific blood components are added
What is a Selective media
favor the growth of one organism over another
What is differential media?
exploit differences between two species that grow equally well
How do bacteria divide?
binary fission
What occurs during binary fission?
one parent cell splits into two equal daughter cells
Generation, or doubling time
Time required for a cycle of fission a.k.a the time required for the population to double
What is the generation time equation?
Nt = N0 x 2n
Nt = N0 x 2n
Nt is the final cell number,
N0 is the original cell number
n is the number of generations
How do you calculate the number of generations in the generation time equation?
Convert the given amount of hours into minutes and divide that by the number of given minutes
What is the lag phase of growth?
Bacteria prepare their cells for growth
What is the log phase of growth?
Cells start to grow
What is the stationary phase of growth?
cells stop growing and shut down
What is the death phase of growth
Cells die with a “half-life”
