A

なん: used immediately before a counter or です

なに: used before a particle and in 何人

how is the particle の used?

A

it connects two nouns. the first noun is the “restriction” which provides more info on the second noun, which is the “main idea”. these two nouns are treated as one big noun in a sentence.
ex:
- たけしさんのでんわばんごう (Takeshi’s phone number)
- 日本の大学 (a university in japan)
- 日本語の学生 (a student of the japanese language)
