What is Trichomonas Vaginalis?
A
A single-celled flagellated (4 anterior and 1 posterior) protozoan parasite spread through sexual intercourse.

Where can Trichomonas be found? (3).
A
- Men : Urethra.
- Women : Urethra.
- Women : Vagina.

Clinical Presentation of Trichomoniasis.
A
- 50% Asymptomatic.
- Non-Specific Symptoms : Vaginal Discharge, Itching, Dysuria, Dyspareunia, Balanitis.
- Vaginal Discharge : Frothy Yellow-Green with Fishy Smell.
- Men : Asymptomatic / Urethritis.

Investigations of Trichomoniasis.
A
- Cervix Examination.
- Vaginal pH > 4.5 (like Bacterial Vaginosis).
- Diagnosis : Standard Charcoal Swab with Microscopy.

Examination Findings of Trichomoniasis.
A
‘Strawberry Cervix’ - Colpitis Macularis - cervicitis resulting in tiny haemorrhages across the surface.

Where should swabs be taken from?
A
- Women : Posterior Fornix of Vagina (or Self-Taken Low Vaginal Swab).
- Men : Urethral Swab (or 1st Catch Urine).

Motile Trophozoites.

A
- GUM Referral - Diagnosis, Treatment and Contact Tracing.
2. Oral Metronidazole 5-7 Days.

- Contracting HIV - Damaged Vaginal Mucosa.
- Bacterial Vaginosis.
- Cervical Cancer.
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.
- Pregnancy-Related Complications e.g. Pre-Term Delivery.
