What is Sterilisation?
Permanent surgical intervention to prevent contraception.
What is the Female Sterilisation procedure?
Tubal Occlusion, performed by laparoscopy under GA where the tubes are occluded using Filshie Clips or are tied, cut and removed.
Is contraception required with Tubal Occlusion?
For the next menstrual period as an ovum may have already reached the uterus during the cycle.
What is the Male Sterilisation procedure?
Vasectomy - the vas deferens is cut to prevent sperm travelling from the testes to join the ejaculate, under LA.
Is contraception required with a Vasectomy?
2 months after procedure and testing of the semen is performed to confirm the absence of sperm (at 12 weeks).
Give 5 complications of a Vasectomy.
- Bruising.
- Haematoma.
- Infection.
- Sperm Granuloma.
- Chronic Testicular Pain.
