What is Premature Ovarian Insufficiency?
A
Menopause before the age of 40.

Aetiology of Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (5).
A
Decline of normal activity of ovaries at an early age.
- Idiopathic (50%).
- Iatrogenic : Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, Surgery (Bilateral Oophorectomy).
- Autoimmune (e.g. Coeliac Disease, Adrenal Insufficiency, Type I Diabetes, Thyroid Disease).
- Genetic : Positive Family History or Turner’s.
- Infection : Mumps, Tuberculosis, CMV.

Hormones in Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (2).
A
Hypergonadotrophic Hypogonadism :
- Raised LH and FSH (negative feedback).
- Low estradiol (under-activity of gonads).

Typical symptoms of Menopause before the age of 40.

Diagnosis of Menopause.
A
Women Below 40 + Typical Menopausal Symptoms + Elevated FSH (on 2 consecutive samples separated by 4_ weeks).

Management of Premature Ovarian Insufficiency.
A
- HRT until usual age of menopause.
2. Traditional HRT or COCP.

Complications of Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (3).
A
Lack of Oestrogen :
- Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke.
- Osteoporosis.
- Cognitive Impairment, Dementia and Parkinsonism.
