Genital System III Flashcards
What is turner’s syndrome?
Occurs when only one X chromosome is present (XO)
When does turner’s syndrome occur?
Durring miosis - non-disjunction.
What causes turner’s syndrome?
Primordial germ cells reach the gonad, but many degenerate shortly after arrival
3 signs of turners syndrome?
Hypoplastic ovary
Small Uterus
Underdeveloped external genitalia
Which species is turner’s syndrome most prevalent?
Horse
What is klinefelter’s syndrome a result of?
Non-disjunction durring miosis giving XXY
Signs of Klinefelter’s syndrome
Male gonads form - individual develops phenotypically as male
Presence of female chromosome causes for hypoplastic testes - prevention of spermatogenesis
What could be the cause of hermaphroditism?
Translocation of a portion of the Y chromosome containing the SRY gene into the X chromosome
What is true hermaphroditism
Gonadal defects present early in gestation both testicular and ovarian tissue present, sometimes as a single organ - ovotestis
What is pseudo-hermaphroditism?
Results from something that occurs during gestation to result in both male and female genitalia not a chromosomal thing but hormonal.
What is one of the most common forms of intersex, particularly in dogs?
Pseudo-hermaphroditism
