Q

What are the stages of the swallowing reflex?

A

1 - Tongue pushes bolus against soft palate & abck of mouth, triggering swallow reflex

2 - Upper esophegal sphincter relaxes while epiglottis closes to keep swallowed material out of the airways

3 - Food moves downward into the oesophagus, propelled by peristaltic waves and aided by gravity

Q

What is the function of the stomach?

A
  • Stores food after swallowed
  • Secretes gastric juice (isotonic with respect to the plasma)

Q

What is the pH of the stomach?

A

pH = 2

17
Q

What happens if the pH of the stomach drops below 2?

A

Acid secretion is inhibited to allow levels to return to normal

18
Q

Why is the pH of the stomach 2?

A
  • Necessary for activating pepsinogen
  • Denatures proteins
  • Kills bacteria
  • Gastric mucosal barrier
