Galvanic Facial Electrical Flashcards
Name the type of current used in Galvanic treatments:
Low Voltage Direct Current
Explain what a direct current is
Current flows from positive (+ve) to negative (-ve)
What are the basic laws of polarity?
+ve attracts -ve
+ve repels +ve
-ve repels -ve
What does the client hold during the treatment?
The indifferent or inactive electrode (metal bar electrode covered in a damp galvanic envelope)
State what happens under the positive electrode (Anode +ve)
Acid reaction (Hydrochloric acid) Vasoconstriction Pores tighten Erythema is reduced Sppthes nerve endings Decreases Lymph Tighten and firms the skin
State what happens under the negative electrode (cathode -ve)
Alkaline reaction (Sodium hydroxide) Vasodilation Pores are relaxed Sebum is softened and broken down (saponification) Stimulates nerve endings Increases lymph Softens the skin
What does saponification mean?
The breaking down of fat (Sebum) by an alkali to form soap.
How do you know if a product is suitable to use with a galvanic current?
The product will be marked with (-ve) or (+ve) or in some cases with both symbols.
When would you apply desincrustation within the facial?
After exfoliation and steam but before extractions.
What must you do after applying desincrustation?
Reverse the polarity to (+ve) to restore the skins pH
When can you apply iontophoresis within the facial?
Always after desincrustation
After the massage with suitable products
or
Over a ionised mask product such as Dermalogica Colloidal, multi vitamin mask, colloidal oat mask
What milliamperage should you not exceed on the face?
2mA
What electrical could you apply after desincrsutation on a congested/oily skin type; before reversing the polarity to (+)?
Direct High Frequency to create a germicidal effect
List the specific contra-actions that could occur during the treatment?
Sensitisation due to intensity of treatment or products
Galvanic burn
Metallic taste
