Fungi Flashcards

Q

What are Fungi?

A

Fungi are eukaryotic organisms. They possess a chitinous cell wall and produce filamentous structures and spores

In nature we are most familiar with them as mushrooms or mold (moulds).

Mushrooms and other similar structures are the fruiting bodies of molds. Fruiting bodies are not found in fungal infections.

Fungi are heterotrophs and live by decomposing organic material, either living or dead.

Saprophytes decompose dead things, and parasitic fungi invade and decompose living material. Some do both, killing what they parasitize
