Explanation and reassurance

A spectrum of symptoms with no structural abnormality to explain them
What are the symptoms of functional dyspepsia?
Upper abdominal pain or discomfort Fullness Early satiety Bloating Nausea
What are the two subgroups of functional dyspepsia?
Epigastric pain syndrome
Post-prandial distress syndrome
What is epigastric pain syndrome?
Subcategory of functional dyspepsia characterised by epigastric pain unrelated to meals
What is post-prandial distress syndrome?
Subcategory of functional dyspepsia categorised by postprandial discomfort and early satiation
What is the management for functional dyspepsia?
Reassurance, explanation and lifestyle changes
PPIs for epigastric pain syndrome
Pro-kinetic agents for post-prandial distress syndrome
SSRI in refractory cases
What is gastroparesis?
Delayed gastric emptying
What are the symptoms of gastroparesis?
Nausea and vomiting Early satiety Fullness Bloating Upper abdominal pain
What is the criteria for diagnosis of IBS?
Recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort associated with two or more of the following:
Improvement with defecation
Change in form of stool
Change in frequency of stool
